What Grabs Most Reader?
What grabs most readers is a good story. If you’re an avid reader and have friends with the same passion for a good story, you’ve probably heard it said more than once – it wasn’t the best writing, but it had me from the first page. Or, the writing was beautiful, but I couldn’t get into the story.
I’ve often said that – a good editor can make a mediocre writer sound great as long as they write a good story. It’s more difficult to change great writing into a good read if the writer doesn’t capture the reader’s imagination and pace the story in such a way that creates a desire and a need to find out what happens in the end.
This is true for both fiction and nonfiction. Though the story will develop as you write, before starting out, have an idea how your story – whether imaginative or based on research – will hold the readers attention because they can’t wait to find out how or what the story or character discovers or uncovers and how that creates a shift in the character and/or readers understanding or belief. (A long sentence but true.)
Have fun with it.
