The right attitude is your best friend when you write. It helps you persevere when you hit bumps along the way. In the long run, it gets you to the finish line.

All the talent, a great command of the English language and even tips for creating a brilliant story will only get you so far if you don’t have authority over your attitude. Without that authority, you can easily fall into the trap of negative, self-abusive thinking, or give up altogether.

A bumper sticker I’ve seen more than once in the last month states, “Don’t believe everything you think.” Learning how to identify critical self-talk before you start to believe it and buy into its idea of you or your circumstances, is a necessity of life as well as one for writing a book.

There are many helpful practices for “changing your thoughts and therefore changing your life.”

One very simple practice is to catch a negative thought before it takes hold. When I start feeling depressed or down I ask myself,

“What was I thinking about before I started to feel this way?” I usually find that the last thing I was thinking took me down the rabbit hole of my worst fears and predicaments.

When you start feeling bad, sad, happy or glad, notice what you’ve been thinking. After all, we do “make up our minds” one way or another.

enJOY!
