7 Valuable Tips for Success of a Book

If you’re looking for book sales, which if you’ve taken the time to write one – Why Not – according to a recent survey, here’s a list of tips in the order of importance. I’m sure there’s room for discussion, but here goes.

The 7 most important variables in the success of a book are:

  1. The size of the author’s “tribe” (usually represented primarily by an email list and then a social media following).
  2. The success of a book is its title.
  3. The success of a book is its cover.
  4. The success of a book is the number of positive reviews.
  5. The success of a book is the book description (back cover copy).
  6. The front matter, before the first chapter, because of Amazon’s Look Inside feature.
  7. The quality of your writing

My thoughts on the list:
Number 1 – in order to sell books, you need to let others know it exists.
Number 2 – piquing a reader’s curiosity often begins with the title.
Number 3 – we are visual beings and often make out decisions based on visual appeal.
Number 4 – when we’re unsure, a positive third-party comment can sway us.
Number 5 – whetting a reader’s appetite is sometimes all that’s needed to initiate a purchase.
Number 6 – love them or hate them, because of Amazon’s Look Inside feature.
Number 7 – sad but true – not every reader judges a book by the quality of its writing, a good story will keep them engaged even if the writing is mediocre, and once purchased, not everyone will ask for a refund.
