How to Choose a Great Title~

The most important thing is to make sure that your title reflects your content in some way. Consider the essence of your book. Is there an underlying theme that runs throughout your story or a universal concept or feeling that stands out?

For a while, one-word titles were popular. Although they can seem catchy and interesting, they can also get lost in the search results of other book titles that contain that word. Having only one word for your title also increases the chances of running into duplicate titles.

Once you have a few you’re happy with, do a search to make sure that your desired title is not already taken. If it is, unless the book is by a lesser-known author or is out of print, it’s better to change your title.

Make a list of the titles that surface as you’re writing your book. You may choose a title – a working title – at the beginning, but be open to surprising yourself with an even better one in the end. If uncertain, run your favorite options by friends and colleagues. Ultimately the choice is yours but feedback can be invaluable. Most of all have fun with it and enjoy the process. Like life, when we bear down on it, we narrow our options and our creativity.

Enjoy!
