When Can You Break the Rules? – Writing Tip 8/14

When Can You Break the Rules?

One of the main rules of writing is that if you do it with enough assurance and confidence, you’re allowed to do whatever you like. ~Anonymous

As an editor, reading books that break all the rules is difficult. I remember reading The Road by Cormack McCarthy and being astounded that there was
absolutely no punctuation. However, having many books on the New York Times Best Seller’s list, McCarthy can do whatever he wants. Ernest Hemmingway was also known for breaking the rules of writing as were many others.

The catch is, according to the Writers Cooperative, “You must know and understand the rules before you can break them. Only when you have that foundational knowledge will you know how you can circumvent and create something new.”

If you’re a first-time writer or publishing for the first time, it’s best to follow at least the grammatic rules and write honestly and passionately about your subject. Make a name for yourself and your readers with think everything you do – including breaking the rules – is simply art.

Enjoy!!
