Stories Engage Readers

We are not thinking creatures with feelings; we are feeling creatures that have thoughts. Whether fiction or non-fiction, your readers want an experience – you need to change their emotional state.

I did not write the above tip, but somewhere along the way, I saved it. It changed the way I thought about writing. It made me realize that no matter what I wrote, I would include stories. And, since most of my writing is non-fiction, I would base the bulk of what I wrote on my own experiences.

When you write about what you know, drawing from your life experience, you can write both fiction and nonfiction in a way that moves your readers. Give them a story – a beginning, middle, and end – with a theme they can relate to and they’ll follow your writing from beginning to end.. You’ll not only engage your readers, you’ll have more fun writing.

Have a Happy Thanksgiving. You’ll receive your next tip on December 5th.

Enjoy!
